Trendify Labs position paper
Understanding sport through structured match data
A position paper on using AI to reason about sport as a changing system rather than a table of isolated scores.
Released 5 September 2026
The problem
A scoreline records an outcome, but it does not explain form, tactics, injuries, opponents, venue, competition or the sequence of events that produced it. A useful sports system must connect these factors while avoiding the false certainty that often accompanies prediction.
Trendify Labs' position
Trendify Labs sees sports intelligence as a test of contextual reasoning under uncertainty. Systems should separate what happened from why it may have happened, represent competing explanations and make probabilistic predictions that can be evaluated after the event. What we will research
- Assemble complete season-level match and event data.
- Establish simple baselines before testing machine-learning models.
- Evaluate calibration, not only win-rate accuracy.
- Study how venue, form, opponent strength and match context change predictions.
Evidence boundary
The supplied sample contains four matches and 14 goals. It is adequate for demonstrating normalization and derived outcomes, but it cannot support season-level conclusions or a reliable prediction model.
What this paper does not claim: It does not claim that Trendify has solved this problem, that the supplied data is complete, or that a model performs well without a defined benchmark and reproducible evaluation.
What success would mean
Success would mean a system that is useful to analysts because it explains its inputs, expresses uncertainty, detects when the data is insufficient and can be evaluated against a transparent baseline.
