Trendify Labs position paper

Culture and contextual AI

A position paper on why culturally grounded context must be treated as part of AI capability, not an afterthought.

Released 5 August 2026

The problem

AI systems can produce fluent language while misunderstanding the people, history, social norms and places in which that language is used. The problem is not only language coverage. It is whether a system can interpret meaning in context and avoid flattening communities into incomplete labels.

Trendify Labs' position

Trendify Labs believes cultural context belongs in the research design itself: in the data model, the benchmark, the human review process and the deployment boundary. A community record is not a culture, and a population number is not cultural understanding. Structured data can help establish provenance and scope, but it cannot substitute for community partnership or contextual evaluation.

What we will research

  • Build community-aware evaluation sets rather than testing only generic language fluency.
  • Measure whether models preserve context across language, place, subgroup and scenario.
  • Develop provenance and consent practices for culturally grounded data.
  • Study error patterns with community-informed review, not only aggregate scores.

Evidence boundary

The current supplied dataset is a starting context layer: five community records, two language families and 15 county associations. Those figures describe the dataset, not culture coverage or model capability. The next research step is to define tasks, annotations, baselines and evaluation protocols.

What this paper does not claim: It does not claim that Trendify has solved this problem, that the supplied data is complete, or that a model performs well without a defined benchmark and reproducible evaluation.

What success would mean

Success would mean an AI system can identify when cultural context is missing, ask for clarification, preserve important distinctions and communicate uncertainty instead of producing confident but culturally shallow answers.
